BASIC JOB PURPOSE: The OR Surgical Technologist II category includes LVN's and Surgical Technologists, that function within the full scope of practice, and contributes to the implementation of the nursing process. PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS: 1. ACTIVITY: Care is provided to assure that individualized, planned, and appropriate service occurs to meet specific care, treatment, and rehabilitation goals. STANDARD: 1a. Patient Care is provided and reflects an in depth knowledge of: • Patient Status. • Age related growth and development needs. • Appropriate case/preference card needed for surgical procedures. 1b. Routine patient care tasks defined within the departmental policy and procedures are demonstrated. Mentors peers to ensure quality patient care standards are met. Specific quality standards are listed below - but not limited to: • Safety. • Sterile Technique. • Counts. • Specimens. 1c. Interventions are verbalized and implemented with assistance from preceptor according to policies, procedures, and/or unit standards of care, and reflect age related needs. 1d. Potential negative outcomes are recognized and preventative measures are implemented where applicable by anticipating instruments needed and passing them efficiently to the surgeon and other team members. 1e. Daily assignments are completed as assigned. 1f. Medications are prepared and introduced to the surgical field with adherence to all safety parameters and policies and procedures. 1g. Proper sterile technique for gowning and gloving is demonstrated. The Surgeon is assisted with gowning and gloving as well as draping the patient, as directed. Maintains the sterility of gown, gloves, and drapes while assisting. 1h. An understanding of all basic and complex procedures is demonstrated. Sets up instruments and equipment necessary to perform the procedures. 1i. An understanding of the types of suture necessary for specific cases, is demonstrated. Recognizes when to have suture available versus open and prepared on the field. Suggests alternative sutures to physician when applicable based on knowledge of suture type, tissue being sutured, and surgical procedure being performed. 1j. Hand scrub, gowning and gloving, and procedural set up is complete prior to patient being induced with anesthesia. 1k. Back table and mayo stand are set up according to departmental policy and procedure and are kept organized throughout the procedure. Mentors others in this activity. 1l. Instruments are passed to the surgeon in an acceptable manner so the surgeon does not turn away from the field. Recognizes surgical hand signals. 1m. The sterile surgical field is set up and maintained with an in-depth understanding of the case flow to meet the needs of the patient. 1n. Accurate performance of duties described in OR policy and procedures scrub role. 2. ACTIVITY: Patient care needs are determined through the collection, observation, and analysis of patient specific data by qualified individuals. STANDARD: 2a. Case needs are reviewed prior to setting up the surgical suite to ensure all equipment and supplies are available. 2b. The appropriate preference cards are pulled, and utilized to prepare for the case, additions and deletions are made to the cards as necessary. 2c. Instrumentation and equipment needs are assessed prior to cases and appropriate substitutions are made. 2d. The sterile surgical field is set up and maintained, with and understanding of the case flow to meet the anticipated needs of the case. 2e. Abnormal or unusual data and observations are reported to the Charge Nurse or RN for assessment<br /> <br /> <br /> <span style="color:#222222; font-size:12px; font-weight:600">Comments</span><br /> 10 hr shifts 0645-1700 On-Call Optional Sun-Wed
