trustaff Traveler Spotlight: Bathany F.

Bathany F., a Med/Surg RN on assignment as a trustaff traveler in Texas, is a true inspiration. During her the course of her assignment, Bathany assisted a patient who had recently received a terminal diagnosis. Deeply moved by her patient’s story and experiences, she kept thinking about it even after her shift was over.

According to Fox News 4, Monica Batten had no idea she was living with cancer. She sought care from her doctor after experiencing pain in her feet. “I thought I’d bought the wrong kind of tennis shoes,” said Bratten.

But after further followup, Bratten and her doctor discovered she had something more serious going on—stage 4 bone cancer.

It was during part of her treatment that Bratten, only 62 years old, met nurse Bathany F. During the course of Monica’s care, she and Bathany got to talking. Though Bratten is remaining positive, she says her diagnosis has made her reflect on what the future may or may not hold.

Monica and Bathany started discussing their ‘bucket lists;’ their daydreams about the things they’d like to do before their last day on earth.

“Monica said to me, ‘You know I was thinking about what I’d do if it was my last day on earth.’ She said, ‘I think I would just gorge… just gorge all day,’” explained Bathany. “And I said, ‘What would you eat?’ And Monica said, ‘I would eat lobster.’”

Their conversation left an indelible impression. On her day off, Bathany kept thinking about her patient’s dream.

“I thought about what I would do on my last day,” Bathany said. “And I thought: she shouldn’t have to wait for her last day.”

She decided at that moment to make Monica’s dream a reality. Bathany went to a nearby restaurant and ordered an enormous lobster dinner—to go. When the manager heard the story of why she was buying such a meal, he decided to cover the bill and add to it.

She brought Monica the dream dinner they both had talked about. “I got big tears in my eyes,” said Monica, “I could not stop crying.”

Bathany, from all of us at trustaff: Your generosity and caring show through in everything you do! We’re very proud to have you as a #trustafftraveler and you are an excellent example of the care and support that are at the heart of every fantastic healthcare professional.
