tru-Qs: How to find short-term housing

One of the biggest pieces of your travel nursing puzzle is finding an affordable, short-term housing option.

It can be so easy to get overwhelmed with the options online and lose track of time scrolling through countless pictures.

Our career consultants get a lot of questions about housing options. So for this week’s tru-Qs, we address some of those commonly asked questions.

Q1: Do travel agencies provide housing?

A: Many do! A lot of agencies have staff onsite that are dedicated to helping you find the best available housing in the vicinity of your assignment. They will give you the option to live in agency provided housing if you wish.

Q2: Can I provide my own short-term housing while on assignment?

A: Yes! In fact, many of our travelers would prefer this. trustaff offers some housing assistance, but if you prefer to make your own housing arrangements we will simply pay you a housing per diem amount in your weekly check when you can then use to offset your housing costs. The availability and amount of the housing allowance varies from assignment to assignment and depends upon the respective costs of living and any governmental limitation amounts. Check with your career consultant to determine your specific options.

Q3: Where can I look for good short-term housing?

A: Take a look at some vacation rental websites. HomeAway, VRBO, and Airbnb could have some great options for you. Some traveling nurses have used extended stay hotels. They provide unique amenities like breakfast, housekeeping, fitness centers, and others. Social media can also be a great resource to look for roommate or housing options. There are a number of Facebook groups specifically for traveling nurses looking for housing!

Q4: How can I save money on housing?

A: There are a number of ways to save money when you’re looking for short-term housing options. Finding your own housing gives you a bit more flexibility than taking agency provided housing. You can decide your budget and find more affordable options and keep your housing stipend all to yourself. Joining some loyalty programs for hotels or having a rewards credit card could give you a great discount on extended stay rooms over time as well.
