Fort Wayne, Indiana is a hidden gem. It’s one of those towns you don’t hear a lot about, but as soon as you visit, you have to go back. It’s jam-packed full of fun things to do and amazing restaurants and dessert shops.
The local healthcare facilities are very welcoming to travelers too (major bonus!).
If you’re considering Fort Wayne for your next assignment, here are a few things we think you should add to your bucket list before you go!
What to do while you’re in Fort Wayne:
- Visit the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory: With both indoor and outdoor gardens, you’ll get to experience all of nature’s abundance all in one walk. From the desert to the tropical gardens, the Conservatory is a perfect way to spend an afternoon. The photo opportunities are endless AND it’s super affordable. Just $5 for an adult and $3 for the kiddos.
- Tour the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo: Let’s be real: even though it says ‘Children’ it’s not just the kids. Adults have a blast too at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. It’s a high-quality zoo with some amazing charm. Ride along on the Z.O.&O. Railroad or the Endangered Species Carousel. Feed the giraffes and the goats or walk along the Pony Trail.
- Spend an evening at Headwaters Park – The 30-acre park right in downtown Fort Wayne provides a setting for a wide range of public and private events including festivals, concerts, cultural events, weddings, and other events. There’s always something going on there and it’s a great place to sit back, relax, and enjoy. The free Splash Pad is open spring to fall and outdoor ice skating opens from late November thru February. Check out the events schedule before you arrive!
Where to eat: Baker Street Steakhouse
They call this “one-of-a-kind fine dining.” The food is amazing and the extensive selection of wines and craft beers rivals the food. Eat out on the patio, take a seat at the bar, or make a reservation for a private spot in the dining room. Just take a look at some of their reviews:
“Quality restaurant. The best dining experience I’ve had in Fort Wayne. Usually, at the other high-end steakhouses in town, you get one or two things that are really good and the rest is just good. Well at Baker Street everything was amazing. It is rare to find a restaurant that hits top marks on quality in every aspect from the food to the staff and the drinks. Also, I spent less here than at Eddie’s so that was a bonus!” – Jeff B.
“Absolutely a great place to go. The food was a little expensive but worth it. They make everything on demand so they can accommodate to your needs. You can make it exactly how you want it. Great place for an anniversary or date. A must visit!” – Jason G.
“Absolutely awesome and classy place. We took our son in and they were super patient with us and him. Highly recommend this place, we ate some food that was out of our comfort zone and it was amazing.” – Kory S.
Grab a sweet treat: Purple Mountain Cheesecakes & Desserts, Inc
Cheesecake lovers will swoon over the homemade desserts from Purple Mountain. I mean, take a look at their menu. It makes your mouth water just looking at it! It’s the perfect place to stop when your sweet tooth hits. The locals love them too (of course):
“Best cheesecakes I’ve ever had and not too costly!!! I recommend calling ahead of time if you want a specific flavour. But they’re all amazing! Plus they do custom orders and the salted caramel cheesecake is my all time favorite and a must have!!” – Abeer S.
“These guys have some of the best cheesecakes I have ever had. The Bacon Maple Cheesecake is so good that it should be illegal. Can’t wait for the day that they have a retail location. Keep up with the good work guys!” – Aaron Ecenbarger
“These cheesecakes are amazing I have had many cheesecakes in my life but nothing as good as purple mountains. I would encourage everyone to try one. Hats off to all the people at Purple Mountain there’s nothing like a freshly made cheesecake. I put my order in on Thurs and picked it up on Fri and let me tell you it was well worth the wait I will be ordering again soon.” – Angie H.
We asked some of our travelers that have taken an assignment in Fort Wayne to tell us what they thought. Here’s what they had to say:
“Fort Wayne is a little-hidden gem. I had no idea there was so much out here. I thought it was a small farm village, but it’s quite the booming little city. It was cute!”
“Very travel-friendly, and surprisingly very busy. I loved the pace and the facility. The city was a ton of fun. I didn’t expect all the different stuff out here. Neat place.”
