Talk about Relationship Goals, Brian and Kelsey W. make us all a wee bit jealous!
Brian and Kelsey met while Brian was on a travel assignment and their friendship bloomed into something spectacular. We love getting to see them travel the world as a team and they take some AMAZING photos. They just celebrated their one year anniversary by spending 2 weeks in Australia. Then they’ll fly over to New Zealand for 7 weeks, and then Hawaii for one week before heading back to the real world. Talk about adventure!
Their recruiter, Shawn, nominated them for a spotlight. He said, “I have enjoyed working with Kelsey & Brian and hearing about their adventures outside of work. I could not ask for a better travel team. When I put them at an assignment, I have no worries that they will show up every day they are scheduled and give 100%. Great people and great nurses.”
They were kind enough to answer a couple of questions for us about their careers and lives as traveling nurses! Take a look at what the lovely couple shared.
Tell us about you. Where are you from? Family? Friends? Pets?
Brian is from a family of 4, all nurses now, growing up in Ocala, Florida. Kelsey is from a family of 7 born in Alaska but grew up in Tacoma, Washington.
We met on Brian’s second travel nursing contract. Kelsey was working per diem at the facility he did a contract at in Olympia, Washington. Kelsey took him around to some of the coolest hikes in Washington state as friends and gradually this grew into an intimate relationship. Brian proposed to Kelsey in Norway on top of a world-famous rock called, “trolltunga.” Then, they eloped to the Greek islands!
Why did you decide to become a nurse in the first place?
Kelsey: In my childhood, I spent many years in a hospital because my younger brother had leukemia and I admired what the nurses were doing. From then on, I wanted to be a nurse.
Brian: I love change. Nursing is a profession I can go many directions if I get tired in a certain specialty.
What made you want to start traveling as a nurse?
Kelsey: I love to travel. It was just a no-brainer.
Brian: In nursing school, I was planning on travel nursing for a few years before settling down… eventually.
What was your first assignment like?
Kelsey: My first assignment was with Brian in Bangor, Maine. I thought it would be difficult, but learning the new EMR and a new facility was fairly easy.
Brian: My first contract was in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They gave a thorough orientation and all of my requests were respected. Looking back, I was spoiled for my first.
What is your favorite thing about travel nursing?
Kelsey: Having the freedom to take months off of work for travel.
Brian: Experiencing what it is like living in different areas of the United States and getting paid to do it.
What would you say is the hardest part? And how do you overcome that?
Kelsey: Some co-workers tend to discriminate against travelers when they know you are making more money than them for the same job. To overcome, you just have to kill them with kindness and work hard. Then, they will come around.
Brian: Some facilities try to push your boundaries and sometimes break contract terms. You have to stand your ground and have a firm wall. Otherwise, you could be taken advantage of.
How many assignments have you taken and where?
Kelsey: 4 assignments
Brian: 8 assignments
What advice would you give someone that is thinking about becoming a traveling nurse?
Kelsey: Few people travel and then say they regretted it, just do it.
Brian: I sold most of my possessions. Everything we own fits in a Subaru Forester. It has been the most fulfilling experience of my life.
