Tell us about YOU! Where are you from? Family? Friends? Pets?

Hello, 👋 I’m Niki. I’m from Georgia, I am a 47-year-old mother of 2 amazing sons, Khari and Khamajha, as well as a grandmother of 3 perfect little people, Izzy 2, Khariyuna 1 and Kaden 1 week old. My parents, Otis and Linda Newton, married for 48 years and my significant other, Jeffrey, makes up my amazing family and support system.

I enjoy reading, meeting people, traveling, music, shopping, learning, and life, in general.❣️ I’m a girly girl, hair, nails, clothes, shoes, purses, perfumes, jewelry and self-pampering, I enjoy it all. My parents taught me at an early age: Enjoy life every day, working is not optional so choose a career that makes you happy and that will fulfill you daily. That’s my motto towards life…….LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH OFTEN😍

Why did you decide to go into healthcare?

I’ve always been a caregiver since I was a little girl, even always taking care of my dolls 😁 My parents started doing respite care for young adults with developmental disabilities to give caregivers a break. One day they received a call needing respite care for a 13-month-old little boy that was abused by his biological parents, his biological father tried to burn him alive 💔 the smoke caused severe brain damage and they said he would not make it to 2 years of age😭

My parents went to meet Tony and at first, my mom said she could not do it, her heart hurt for him, but they turned down the case. However, after they got home that night my mom couldn’t sleep and she later told me that she tossed and turned all night thinking of that little boy. Her mind kept telling her no, but her heart told her yes. The next day they went and picked him up, brought him home for the weekend and when I met him I instantly fell in love with this beautiful, little guy with the biggest beautiful brown eyes I’d ever seen in my 9 years on earth. 💓

That weekend came and went and my parents got a phone call requesting a longer respite because the lady that Tony lived with was an elderly woman and she could no longer care for him because his care was 24 hours around the clock. Again my mom struggled with getting attached and her heart won 💓

To shorten the story, Tony is 38 years old with a lot of love, tears, and joy. Tony is my little brother. I watched my parents love my little brother to life. They started a business and named the Personal care homes after Tony, Briceland Loving Personal Care Home #1, #2 and #3❣️(his last name is Brice) As he got older our family home was not sufficient because it has steps and Tony has to be carried and transferred to and from his wheelchair. They built a home customized just for him ❣️💓 Seeing my parents love him back to life helped me make my career choice and I wouldn’t have it any other way. ( Sorry that was so long, but my parents are the real MVP’s).

What prompted you to start traveling?

I enjoy traveling and I love being a nurse, so being a traveling nurse I’ve got my cake and eating it too 😍❣️

What was your first assignment like?

Scary, but rewarding. I’ve actually renewed my contract once and have been offered to renew again.

What’s your favorite thing about traveling?

Meeting new people, experiencing new cultural differences and seeing new things.

What is the most challenging part about traveling? How do you overcome it?

Missing my family, experiencing loneliness. I overcome those times by my support system encouraging me, FaceTime and pictures.

How many assignments have you taken and where?

I’m still on my first assignment in Lewiston, Idaho.

What advice would you have for someone who is thinking about starting their travel career?

Go for it ❣️
