What is a traveling nurse?

A traveling nurse is a healthcare professional that is hired to work at a specific location for a limited amount of time. During their temporary contract—more commonly called an “assignment”—the nurse travels to that location to work in their area of specialty.

Though it is most commonly referred to as “travel nursing,” traveling is not just limited to RNs! Many types of healthcare professionals have the opportunity to travel, including allied health professionals like Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists, LPNs/LVNs, and many more.

How travel nursing works

To find a travel nursing job, healthcare professionals use a travel nursing agency. The travel company (in this case, trustaff) helps match you with an assignment, provides your employee benefits, and manages your paperwork, compliance, and other details.

Assignments for traveling nurses can last anywhere from 4-16 weeks, however 13 weeks is the most common length. After the assignment ends, you can accept an offer to extend at that facility or move on and see somewhere new. Your assignment can be just a few hours from home or all the way across the country—the choice is up to you.

At trustaff, we pride ourselves on the lasting personal relationships we develop with each of our travelers year after year. Since so much of our business is built on trust, the satisfaction of our travelers is our number one priority.

From 24/7/365 one-on-one support or help getting licensed in a new state to having your own dedicated team to help tackle your paperwork, we know we’re doing our jobs right when you have a great experience.

Why do hospitals need traveling nurses?

Facilities hire traveling nurses for a variety of reasons. Some common examples include: filling in for a leave of absence, accommodating seasonal fluctuations in the city’s population, assisting with an upcoming EMR conversion, or providing patient care while new staff are in training.

Nurses are in very high demand, and staffing shortages can put patients at risk. Traveling nurses make sure the patients continue to get great care, regardless of the circumstances.

“I am genuinely impressed with trustaff. Everyone I've dealt with has been so nice. My recruiter is awesome to work with—he allows me time to think about what's best for me rather than putting me under the gun and telling me where I am going to go and what I will do. He seems to genuinely care if things are going well for me and tries to find a solution that works well for everyone involved if there's an issue. I'm definitely glad that I found this agency, I love travel nursing now."
