Which stethoscope is the best?

It is no secret! Surveys 99% of nurses own and use a stethoscope on a daily basis. With so much depending on this critical tool, many wonder: which stethoscope is best?

It turns out the answer is nearly unanimous! Almost everyone will tell you that 3M Littmann stethoscopes are the best stethoscopes. Proof is readily available by performing a quick query through a favorite search engine. But what makes them so great, and why do so many healthcare professionals depend on them?

Why are Littmann stethoscopes the best?

David Littmann first began his play in the stethoscope game in the 1960s. Littmann stethoscopes have since become the gold standard. Year after year, the acoustic rating is consistently the highest in the market. While listening to the patient, the premium sound isolation ensures that results are optimal.

The barrier to entry when considering one of the best stethoscopes to ever hit the market is a surprisingly low cost. At a listed price of $44.99 on amazon.com, the 3M Littmann Lightweight can be a quality choice.

For those who want to take a more snazzy approach, you can find the 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscope for the modest price of $397. Towards the middle of these is the Littmann Cardiology III, generally noted as the best stethoscope of 2016.

With dozens of options in between the two extremes, high acoustic ratings, and with customizable options for every stethoscope it is practically impossible to not be pleased with a Littmann stethoscope.

What is the best stethoscope other than Littmann?

Of course there are many options other than Littmann that are admirable for their quality! Here are a few in no particular order.

  • Omron Sprague Rappaport Stethoscope – This “economy” stethoscope is a gem among its class. If you’re looking for a replacement or backup, this is a wonderful choice.
  • MDF MD One Dual Head Stethoscope – The MDF is another less expensive alternative to the Littmann that is comparable to the high end names. With sensitive diaphragms, lifetime parts warranty, and multiple colors, no wrong doings can be found here.
  • American Diagnostic Platinum Adscope 615v – The draw for this option is its light and long tube. The stethoscope is extremely comfortable and durable.
  • Pro Physician Single Head Cardiology – Many compare this stethoscope directly to the Littmann equivalent. Most complimented is the loud volume and clarity. In addition to the sound, the ear tips are also very comfortable.

Choosing the Best Stethoscope

Why you need non-chill diaphragms

In the end of it all, the primary concern should be clinical accuracy and comfort for you and your patients. Many stethoscopes include a non-chill diaphragm and extra ear tips.

We all know there’s nothing worse than spending your day struggling to hear, freezing a child with an unwelcome surprise, or sticking uncomfortable things in your ear!
