How to Become a Histotechnologist
To become a histotechnologist, you can follow one of three paths after receiving a high school diploma or a GED certificate:
On-the-job training:
You can complete two years of on-site clinical training in a histopathology lab.
Histotechnology program:
Various colleges and online universities offer accredited histology programs.
Schooling and experience:
You can earn an associate or bachelor's degree in an approved major, such as chemistry or biology, and then complete one year of training in a histopathology lab.
Once you complete one of these three prerequisites, you can qualify for the histotechnician (HT) exam offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). If you pass this national exam, you are a certified histology technician.
Those who wish to become histotechnologists must have a higher level of education and training and complete an advanced-level histotechnologist (HTL) certification. This credential offers more career advancement opportunities as it allows you to perform high-complexity testing and supervise histotechnicians in the laboratory setting.
